News from the Trustees – Bob Laverton – June 2022

We are sorry to bring you the news that Bob Laverton MBE, who was a trustee of RLT for more than 30 years, passed away at the age of 100 earlier this month.

Bob LavertonAmongst his many accomplishments, Bob spent forty-two years with Lloyds Bank plc, of which 22 were in branch management. He saw war service in the RNVR 1941 – 1946, extending his service with the RNR to 1971 (Reserve Decoration). He was a founder trustee of RLT and in 2004, Bob was awarded an MBE for “services to RLT in Tanzania”. This picture was taken in 1992 on a visit Bob made to Kindwitwi. Bob, on the right, is with Canon Robin Lamburn, the founder of Kindwitwi Leprosy Care Centre, and of whom Bob described as, ‘The man who inspired us all’.

RLT is hugely indebted to Bob for the thirty years or more he gave of his time working tirelessly to keep the accounts in order, corresponding with donors and encourage donations. Cases of leprosy in the Rufiji District are now few and far between, more children are going to attend secondary school and the Kindergarten in Kindwitwi is thriving. The funds from RLT from when the charity was formed in 1983 have made a significant contribution to effecting this change. Bob’s many years of guardianship of RLT finances as Trustee and Treasurer made this possible and we will always be indebted to him for the time he devoted to the RLT.

Our thoughts are with Bob’s family at this time.
