Ex-patients
By 'ex-patients' we mean those people who have been cured of leprosy, some of whom will have no after effects and some of whom will be left with numbness or even loss of fingers or feet. Those ex-patients who cannot look after themselves are, of course, looked after in the Kindwitwi Ward but there are those who can do some work. These ex-patients have their own houses and do much to look after themselves by tending their 'shambas' (farms). Both the Care Centre and the Kindwitwi Development Association give any extra help that they need.
This ex-patient manages to tend his rice even though he is an amputee.
Many 'ex-patients' came to Kindwitwi many years ago from a long way away. They were turned out of their village because of the fear leprosy inspired. Not surprisingly, they were reluctant to return and so they stayed on in Kindwitwi, making it their home and founding new families.
Mr Kingaro is one such person. He originally came from Jaribu and sadly, because of the stigma of leprosy, he had to leave a wife and six children behind. But he has settled down in Kindwitwi and now has a new wife and three healthy children. He works as the guard and helper in the Guest House. Here he is seen cleaning some pots and pans.
